| Our
mission is to provide humanitarian outreach to the people of Cuba
who are struggling to obtain essential human goods such as medicine,
medical supplies, and reading materials. We sponsor annual humanitarian
missions that not only donate material goods from the United States
to Cuba but also build relationships between Americans and Cubans.
We
sponsored our first trip to Cuba in 2001 and this initial humanitarian
outreach delivered 4,000 books to libraries. In January 2002, we
returned with over 6,000 books, and launched a new friendship project
-- a disability outreach initiative. We brought over thirty cartons
of medical supplies to hospitals and schools serving disabled children,
nearly 2,000 books for visually impaired readers (Braille or large
print), a Braille printer and technical tools for the diagnosis
and treatment of hearing impairments. In 2003 we were able to donate
over $100,000 in medical supplies in addition to thousands of books.
In 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, we were able to further
increase our donations.
All
this has been made possible through the generous donations of individuals
and business as well as the hard work of our ACCESO volunteers.
Having an all-volunteer organization ensures that all donations
benefit the Cuban people directly. Through our experience we've
also learned that small efforts like ours make a significant difference.
We are opening hearts and improving lives.
Our
annual humanitarian mission to Cuba promotes dialogue and exchange
between professionals from many fields such as medicine, education,
business and government. Through good will and open hearts we help
to bridge the gap that separates our peoples and build new relationships
based on mutual respect for one another as fellow human beings.
Our friendship projects open doors and deliver hope to a struggling
people.
In
2011, ACCESO will again sponsor a trip to Cuba. We will continue
the work we've begun -- helping literacy efforts by putting new
books on library shelves, improving health care by delivering medical
supplies, and improving quality of life for the disabled by donating
disability equipment. We will look for new ways to improve lives
and relieve suffering. Our organization is non-partisan and all
shipments are conducted in accordance with U.S. regulations for
humanitarian projects in Cuba that directly benefit the Cuban people.
